Anyone who has practiced martial arts for any length of time knows that it has a lot to offer: lessons in teamwork, self defence, humility, self confidence, discipline, and compassion. You might even learn some things that aren’t so practical like a few cool flying spins, or jump kicks. But what many people are unaware of is how martial arts can help both children and adults who suffer from ADHD.

Children crave consistency and structure in their lives, and adults thrive when there is ritual involved. The martial arts contain all three elements – consistency, structure, and ritual. These elements are even more beneficial when a child or adult suffers from ADD or ADHD. It will help to develop better organizational skills as well as help the ADD or ADHD suffers develop skills to help them cope and function throughout their days.

Okinawan Traditions

According to many experts, Okinawan traditions along with mainland Japanese styles are considered the most beneficial for helping with ADD and ADHD. Aikido is very good for creating consistency, structure, and ritual. The same applies for Kenjutsu, lai-do, and Kendo; however, it is harder to find these particular disciplines.

Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is commonly found among communities. Tae Kwon do originated from Korea and it combines self defence, combat techniques, exercise, sport, philosophy, and meditation. In terms of the number of people, practicing Tae Kwon Do is the most popular martial art.

There are two main forms of Tae Kwon Do. The traditional form typically is referring to the martial art that was established back in the 1950s for the South Korean military. By the 1960s, it was used by various civilian organizations, which included schools and universities.

The two traditional forms of Tae Kwon Do referred to are the one created by founder of ITF Taekwon-Do General Choi Hong Hi in 1955; or WTF Tae Kwon Do, created by founder Dr Kim Un Yong 1973.

Sport Tae Kwon Do has since developed and it has a bit of a different focus, emphasizing on speed and competition as is seen in the Olympic sparring. For the most part Tae Kwon Do will meet consistency, structure, and ritual for the ADD and ADHD participant as well.

Kung Fu

Kung Fu is focused on balancing technique and application. However, traditional Kung Fu did not put a lot of emphasis on forms that would teach technique. On the other hand, Wushu focuses on form but seldom is engaged in combat applications. Of course, this varies from one martial art school to the next. However, in general Kung Fu will meet the needs of DD and ADHD – consistency, structure, and ritual.


Aikido offers the perfect blend of function and form. Aikido is a discipline that’s highly ritualized. The techniques that are learned on the mat are exactly the same as when applied in combat. For example, sword styles like Kenjutsu, Kendo, and lai-do also form a perfect blend of function and form. ADD and ADHD students can benefit from Aikido, although martial arts schools offering this discipline are more difficult to find. Students will learn consistency, structure, and ritual.


Karate originates in Japan and deals with attacks using evasive body movements, blocking, and counter attacks using punches, strikes, and kicks. To a lesser extent restraints, takedowns, and joint locks are uses. It is practiced as a form of self defence, a way of staying fit and healthy, and as a sport. It is popular with ADHD as students learn consistency, structure, and ritual.

Karate teaches balance, aerobic fitness, co-ordination, flexibility, and strength. It also challenges the brain and creates agility and mental alertness. There are three elements of karate kihon, which is the basics; kata, which is the forms; and kumite, which is the sparring. These are not separate elements and they do overlap as they rely on each other.
